Resilience & Agency: What We Are Learning About the Enslaved at Belle Grove Plantation

Thursday, February 20th, 2020
6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
 REGISTRATION REQUIRED

FOSL hosts a special African American history program with Kristen Laise, Executive Director of Belle Grove Plantation. Since 2014, Belle Grove Plantation has been especially active in researching the men, women, and children who the Hite family enslaved. Belle Grove Plantation began with 483 acres given to Isaac Hite Jr. by his father in 1783. By 1824, it had grown to 7,500 acres. Its products were grain, livestock, flax and hemp. Other Belle Grove enterprises included a grist mill, saw mill, distillery, store, lime kiln, quarry, and blacksmith shop. The great commercial success of these enterprises relied upon an enslaved workforce. Surviving records indicate that the Hites at Belle Grove owned 276 men, women, and children between 1783 and 1851. This program will present the archival, archaeological, and contextual research that is underway to understand how the enslaved at Belle Grove lived and worked. Register for this event online.

Trauma & Resiliency Training for Early Childhood Providers

Saturday, February 29th, 2020
11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
 REGISTRATION REQUIRED

Statistics show us that one in four children will experience trauma by the age of four. This trauma could be abuse, hunger, homelessness, witnessing violence, medical trauma, or grief.

We know that a child's greatest learning occurs during the early childhood years. These traumas cause behaviors that we see every day in the classroom. As early childhood providers, we need to recognize the signs of trauma, and teach children how to cope with the feelings they experience.

This training will discuss:

  1. Why trauma matters?
  2. How trauma affects the brain?
  3. How trauma affects behavior?
  4. Individual resilience
  5. Ways to help children cope

This training is free and open to early childhood providers, with priority given to those accepting state subsidy and serving the infant / toddler population. A two-hour training certificate will be given.

We must have at least 10 people registered or the class will be cancelled.

Register online at vachildcare.com. Contact  with any questions.
