"Degenerate Art": The Persecution of Modern Art and Artists in Nazi Germany

Tuesday, October 29th, 2019
6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
 REGISTRATION REQUIRED

In 1937, working under the direction of Adolf Hitler, Nazi Party "cultural minister" Joseph Goebbels assembled in Munich a large exhibition of modern German art that he and the Party deemed "degenerate" - that is, works of art demonstrating "decadence, weakness of character, mental disorder or racial impurity." Pejoratively titled ENTARTETE "KUNST," the exhibition displayed some 650 paintings, sculptures and other works of art against gallery walls covered with scathing pro-Nazi propagandistic commentary. The project proved enormously popular, attracting one million visitors in its first six weeks alone. Afterward, many of the works of art were destroyed and the artists largely forgotten.

Join us as we examine this dark, yet fascinating, chapter in modern art history...and the lessons it holds for us today. Register for this event online.
