I never used to be a Superman fan. To be honest, I always thought he was a whiny, lame-o superhero with too many super powers for his own good. How do you create a good story when the protagonist is more or less invincible? Batman was always the go-to guy in my book. He doesn’t even have powers, and he manages to have some pretty decent adventures with just his fists and a few gadgets for defense. That being said, this is not your typical Superman comic. All-Star Superman shines. It takes the Superman you know and love, and places him in a situation outside the norm. We’re not talking the basic exposure to kryptonite here, this book has Clark Kent face to face with his own mortality. Without giving away too much of the plot, All-Star Superman is definitely worth a read, even if you aren’t the man of steel’s biggest fan. It has beautiful art, and a fantastically deep story line to boot. There are also plenty of side characters and references for die-hard fans. Doomsday makes a featured appearance, as does Krypto the Superdog if you are into pets. My only regret is that i have not had a chance to read Vol. 2, which contains the latter half of this story.
