FAQs

Borrowing

The first time you use your library card, you can check out up to two items. After you've returned your initial two, you may check out as many as sixty items per card at a time, 10 of which can be DVDs.

Everything is checked out to you in two week increments. You're allowed three renewals – the new due date will be two weeks from the day you renewed the item. We cannot renew DVDs, nor can we renew an item if it is on request for another patron.

Late fees are $0.10 per day, per item, with a maximum of $5. The fine for late Interlibrary Loans is $0.25 a day, with a maximum charge of $10.

If an item is damaged or lost, you will be charged for a replacement copy. The cost is what we paid for the item plus a $5 processing fee.

Computer card catalogs are available throughout the library stacks and reference employees are available to assist, as well. You can also access the online catalog from any computer by following this link.

Certainly - in person or over the phone (540.635.3153), a staff member will gladly place a hold on an item for you. You can also reserve something directly from our online catalog, provided you have your library card number and pin number on hand. For detailed instructions, click here.

For items not in our catalog, you can fill out a consideration for purchase form either in person or online at this link. We also have an Interlibrary Loan service available - with this, we can order the item you're looking for from another library for a charge of $5 for shipping and handling.

An interlibrary loan (ILL) is an item that Samuels Public Library borrows from another library for you to check out. To request an item through ILL, it must be more than a year old and something that Samuels Library does not own. There is a small fee to use this service; usually it is $5 per item to cover shipping costs, but sometimes the lending library might charge more. To make an ILL request, please ask at the Adult Reference desk.
